PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF GERRY MURPHY

An Everyman Palace Production in association with Crazy Dog Audio Theatre

As part of the 2009 Midsummer Festival

Directed, designed, composed by Roger Gregg

Cast: Roger Gregg, Sarah Greene, Liam Heffernan, Eimear O’Grady, David Farrell and Winnifred Murphy.

In this dynamic live performance, a group of musician-actors brought the poetry of Gerry Murphy to life with spoken word, song, live music and on-site sound effects.

All the colourful personas that infamously stalk through Murphy’s satirical poems; from his vicious portraits of demented despots, torturers and media knaves, to his passionate sweating and grinding erotic encounters, to his highly personal confessions on love and loss, come to life in an evening of riotous musical entertainment.

The provocative and hugely entertaining writing of Cork born poet Gerry Murphy has been a long time source of inspiration for award winning audio producer, composer and playwright Roger Gregg. Gregg, who has been hailed as ‘one of a handful of truly great radio dramatists’ by BBC Radio 4, brings the oral tradition of poetry into the digital age. Led by Gregg, Crazy Dog Audio Theatre first performed this show at the Everyman bar during the 2008 Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, where the event was recorded as a live radio production.

”Roger Gregg and his crew are exceptional instrumentalists and singers… they have served Gerry Murphy, his readers and his audiences very well” THE IRISH TIMES
