The Year of Magical Thinking, a beautifully told and ultimately uplifting memoir, is based on the real-life experience of the playwright.

In this adaptation of her award-winning (National Book Award for Non-Fiction 2005), best-selling memoir, Joan Didion transforms a story of sudden and unexpected loss into a stunning one-woman play, which starred one of Cork's favourite actresses, Gerry McLoughlin.

"Meeting this challenge, Gerry McLoughlin imposes a creative authority to make the whole piece her own: unafraid of silence; subtle but significant in gesture; her voice measuring the cadences of her sentences; and confident in her pace around Lisa Zagone’s black furniture and backdrop of galactic clouds. Tracked by Paul Denby’s sympathetic lighting, she also manages the transitions which fill in the life shared by Didion and Dunne in a marriage which was not without its antagonisms. In a single-handed play of this kind, credibility is all, and McLoughlin is compelling." IRISH TIMES

"Mixing black humour with visceral grief, Gerry McLouglin's interpretation of Joan Didion's meditation on mourning is huely impressive." IRISH EXAMINER

A co-production by Cork Midsummer Festival, CAMPO Ghent, LIFT, Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s and Everyman Palace Theatre. What’s it really like being a teenager today? And how on earth do you become a happy one? What drives teenagers to profound sadness or extreme violence? Ireland has one of the highest teen suicide rates in Europe. What about the rest of the world?

Directed by one of Europe’s finest directors, Pol Heyvaert of CAMPO Ghent, FML casts a spotlight on the lives of 15 young Corkonians in this whodunit, or better: who’ll do it. Who is the funniest, most beautiful, most dangerous? Who will fall by the wayside? Who won’t live to see twenty? Who needs help?

For all teenagers and everyone who has ever been one…

Parental advisory: suitable for 16 years plus only. Contains strong language and sexually explicit material.

PRESENTED BY PROSCENIUM PRODUCTIONS, IN ASSOCIATION WITH EVERYMAN PALACE THEATRE

Alan Ayckbourn is, without doubt, the most prolific living playwright in the world. The author of no less than 75 plays, he has won Olivier, Tony and Moliere awards. His back catalogue of work is constantly being produced. His play Season’s Greetings has just completed a sell out run at the National Theatre in London. The revival of The Norman Conquests, his trilogy of plays, was the theatrical event of the year in both London and New York in 2009.

Relatively Speaking was Ayckbourn’s first major triumph when it was first produced over forty years ago. Never has the device of mistaken identity, misunderstandings and misapprehensions been used to such hilarious effect as two couples on stage respond to an endless chain of crises and revelations and we are never sure who is in love with whom!
