The Everyman Palace Theatre, Thomas Crosbie Holdings and Cork City Council are delighted to continue in their commitment to support the next generation of theatre practitioners through the Pat Murray Bursary for 2010, which will facilitate a young theatre artist through specialised study or work placement. Now in its third year, the value of the bursary will remain at €14,000.
The Pat Murray Bursary for 2010 will be awarded by a panel of three independent representatives nominated by the funding bodies: the Everyman Palace Theatre, Thomas Crosbie Holdings and Cork City Council.
The 2009 Pat Murray Bursary was awarded to playwright Jody O’Neill. The bursary will enable Jody to embark on a mentorship with Graham Whybrow (former literary manager of the Royal Court), travel to international theatre festivals, undertake research and develop her writing during residential periods at the Tyrone Guthrie Artists’ Centre in Annaghmakerrig.
The inaugural Pat Murray Bursary was awarded to Deirdre Dwyer in December 2008, by Tony Award winner Bob Crowley. Thanks to the bursary Deirdre was able to study Theatre Design at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.
The gifted designer, Pat Murray was a former member of the Arts Council and a member of the Institute of Designers in Ireland. He worked in theatre at all levels, locally, nationally and internationally. The Pat Murray Bursary was created in memory of the late designer, and as a link to a new generation of theatre practitioners.
