ENDGAME
Wednesday 28 January 2009 @ 6pm - UCC's Perforum at The Granary Studio

John Calder, who published the work of Samuel Beckett and 22 other Nobel Prize winners, will deliver a public lecture on Beckett and ENDGAME as part of UCC’s Perforum series at the Granary Studio, The Mardyke on Wednesday 28th January at 6pm. Admission is free.

John Calder is one of the major figures of twentieth century publishing. The principle publisher of Samuel Beckett’s work, Calder was a close friend of the writer for over 40 years. Since setting up his publishing house in 1949, he has published the work of many great twentieth century writers including Steven Berkoff, David Mercer, Robert McLellan, Henry Miller and William Burroughs.

Calder also published Hubert Selby Jr’s ‘Last Exit to Brooklyn’ which was the subject of a landmark obscenity trial in the 1960’s and went to the highest court in the United Kingdom. The book eventually won, setting a precedent to allow everything we read today.

You can listen to an interview with John discussing the trial by clicking the following link http://www.cubbymovie.com/johncalderfull.mp3
