The worlds of opera, ballet, comedy and drama combined to present a gala concert to salute the memory of Pat Murray, the brilliantly original designer whose work visually defined so much of Cork theatre in the second half of the twentieth century.

At the anniversary of his passing his work was celebrated in this show featuring Majella Cullagh, Mary Hegarty, Cara O’ Sullivan, Paddy Comerford, Noel Barrett & Pat Sullivan, Patricia Crosbie, Jane Kellaghan, Anna Kirakowska, Joan Denise Moriarty School of Dance, Cork Airport Singers, CADA, Bernie Cronin, Taylor Lane, Shirley McCarthy, Michael Murphy with filmed contributions from many others. The concert was hosted by comperes Mary Curtin and Michael Twomey.

Pat Murray worked as a designer at all levels, locally, nationally and internationally, from Cork and Dublin to London and New York. At home, Pat’s extraordinary design work in opera, ballet and theatre can be remembered in countless productions in the Cork Opera House, for which he was Artistic Advisor for many years, and at the Everyman Palace Theatre, where he was a consultant on the theatre’s refurbishment in 2004.

His designs included The Ha’penny Bridge by Alistar McGuckian at the Opera House, and at the Everyman Palace Theatre The Glass Menagerie, Art and Goldfish In The Sun, directed by Pat Talbot. Pat’s design for Sleeping Beauty at the Palace for Christmas 2006, under the direction of Catherine Mahon Buckley, was to be his last.

Pat Talbot, Artistic Director of the Everyman Palace Theatre said, ‘ Pat Murray spent his life and career in the service of the performing arts in Cork and beyond. . . . we come together to celebrate the man and his achievements.’

In honour of Pat Murray, Everyman Palace Theatre, Thomas Crosbie Holdings and Cork City Council have co-funded the Pat Murray Bursary for the previous two years. The Bursary facilitates a young theatre artist through specialised study or work placement. Click here to read more.
